Davao City covers a huge area, from the shores of the Davao Gulf to the foothills of Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines. That makes it a wonderful place to explore on a scooter. Here are ride ideas our members return to, and how to prepare for a great day on the road.
Ride Ideas In and Around Davao
The Coastal Road
The Davao City Coastal Road runs along the city's seaside and makes an easy, scenic warm-up ride, especially early in the morning or at sunset. Watch for traffic joining from side roads and be mindful of strong sea breezes.
The Uplands: Calinan and Toril
Head inland and the air gets cooler. The Calinan area is home to places like Malagos Garden Resort and the Philippine Eagle Center, while Toril leads up toward Eden Nature Park in the mountains. Upland roads bring climbs and curves, so ride at a comfortable pace and keep your scooter in good shape for the hills.
Across the Gulf: Samal Island
The Island Garden City of Samal sits just across the water from Davao City and is reached by ferry from the city, including roll-on/roll-off ferries that carry vehicles. Check the current schedules and fares before you go.
How to Prepare
- Check your scooter first. Tyres, brakes, lights and oil; our guide to Vespa maintenance in a tropical climate has a five-minute checklist.
- Plan fuel stops. Fill up before leaving the city, as stations can be farther apart in the uplands.
- Check the weather. Afternoon rain is common in the wet months; start early and pack a rain jacket.
- Wear proper gear. A certified helmet is required by law under the Motorcycle Helmet Act (Republic Act 10054), and gloves, sturdy shoes and a jacket protect you if things go wrong.
- Carry your documents: your driver's licence and the scooter's registration.
- Tell someone your route, or better yet, ride with friends.
Riding in a Group
Group rides are safer and more fun. Agree on the route, stops and a ride leader before setting off, keep a steady pace, and never pressure slower riders. Our guide to riding safely in the Philippines covers road awareness in more detail.
The easiest way to discover new roads is to ride with people who know them. Keep an eye on our events and come along.
Make It a Golf Day
Some of our members combine a ride with a round. If that is you, our guide to the golf courses in Davao City lists where to play.
