Junior Golf in Davao

Lessons, the right equipment and first tournaments: a parent's guide to starting young golfers off on the right foot.

Golf is a game for life, and the earlier children start, the more natural it becomes. It teaches patience, honesty and focus, gets kids outdoors, and gives families something to enjoy together. Davao has an active junior golf scene, so there has never been a better time to start. Here is how.

Start at the Driving Range

The range is the perfect place to begin: no pressure, no waiting groups behind you, and plenty of balls. A few short sessions a week beat one long, tiring one. Keep it fun with targets and small games.

Get Lessons Early

A good teaching professional builds the grip, stance and swing basics before bad habits set in. Ask the golf clubs in Davao about junior lessons and programs; our guide to the golf courses in Davao City lists where they are.

Use the Right Size Clubs

Adult clubs are too long and too heavy for children and make a good swing almost impossible. Junior sets are made for different heights and ages, and a half set (a driver or wood, a few irons, a wedge and a putter) is plenty to start.

Teach Etiquette and Safety From Day One

  • Stand well clear of anyone swinging a club.
  • Stay quiet while others play.
  • Repair ball marks, replace divots and rake bunkers.
  • Shout "Fore!" if a ball heads toward someone.

Short Courses and First Rounds

Before tackling a full course, let kids play a few holes, or play from forward tees so the game feels achievable. Celebrate good shots and good behaviour, not just scores.

First Junior Tournaments

Junior tournaments give young golfers goals and friends to play with. In Davao, the Davao Junior Golfers Association held its October Junior Golf Tournament at Apo Golf & Country Club on October 18, 2026, with around 90 players registered and the player list, tee times and scores on the VCD Golf App. Junior events often use Stableford scoring and handicaps, so beginners can compete too; see golf handicaps explained.

Before their first event, walk your child through what to expect at a golf tournament.

Tips for Parents

  • Protect them from the sun: hats, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • Keep it their game. Encourage, but let them set the pace.
  • Praise effort and honesty. Golf is a game where players call their own penalties.

Organizing Junior Events?

Junior tournaments often have many classes and families waiting for updates. The VCD Golf App shows the player list, tee times and a live leaderboard on every parent's phone, with no account needed.
